As much as we try not to, it is easy as human beings to make snap judgments about each other based on appearances. This is why, for example, an interview suit is such a wise investment for the job hunter.
If you think this only happens in the adult world, think again. Chances are, your children witness this at school, perhaps even by the teacher. How can you help your child cope with not being the teacher’s pet, when there clearly are teacher’s pets?
Are your children very different from each other in personality? Mine are. I have three girls, each one unique. The oldest works hard in school and is very quiet - she rarely gets in trouble in school. My middle daughter is constantly being reprimanded for talking in class, as she is very social. My youngest has not yet started school, but talks constantly.
If your child is complaining about other kids being favored, don’t panic or react right away.
Talk to your child about why they feel the other child is the teacher’s favorite. Maybe they noticed something in class that made them feel overlooked.
Maybe they overheard other children talking - did they actually see the behavior themselves? Children should understand that everyone has different personalities and some will always be more outgoing than others. This doesn’t make those people better or more popular, they may just be noticed more.
A teacher laughing with certain students does not necessarily mean the teacher has favorites. Maybe those students are simply the ones telling the jokes. Calling on the same students does not have to imply favoritism either - maybe those are simply the students raising their hands.
Take your children’s feelings seriously, then encourage them to help themselves. For example, if they feel the teacher always calls on certain students, but they have not been raising their own hand because they don’t know the answer, help them to study harder so that they can raise their own hand with pride!
