As you kids grow from toddlers to school age and into the preteen years, they were probably proud of their cartoon wallpaper border. Then it happens. Tastes change, old favorites become very unpopular and the decor in their bedroom is nothing close to what they would be proud of. Now is the time for a decorating update. Before you embark on this adventure, there are some things you should expect.
They will want to have input and lots of it. They also may have different tastes in decorating than you and will express them forcefully if necessary. You need to decide ahead of time whether it is worth the effort to hold your ground about this or whether you will just let them do their own thing.
Don’t be surprised if your preteen asks for a bright, even shocking color. Or they may want furniture that you wouldn’t even sit on. You’ll definitely need to design some space for flat screen televisions, docking stations and laptops, essential items for every preteen.
An excellent way to save floor space is to invest in a twin loft bed. This will provide a roomy bed for your preteen while also opening up an area underneath for storage. Look for something in a solid colored metal or natural, light wood. Buy a well made piece as this may be the last bed you have to get them.
It’s finally time to pack away the super hero blankets. Replace them with a bedding collection in a more grown up pattern. Whether that is plaid, solid or stripes, it’s entirely up to you, but make sure they choose a pattern you will both be happy with. Stay away from dated, trendy collections and opt for more traditional styles.
They may want you to switch the artwork in their rooms to something trendier and more today. Stay away from frames and permanent fixtures and go for a changeable masterpiece instead. With an over-sized cork board your preteen can have all of their favorite posters hanging up. Then when the wind shifts and there are all new favorites, replacing them is simple and quick.
Preteens need privacy and silence to complete homework and the furniture in their bedroom should allow for that. But you can’t clutter the room too much either. Some choose daybeds, as they offer both a bed and a couch all in one. Your child will still be missing the hard work surface that they need. Opting for loft beds with desk is the perfect compromise. Comfortable sleeping and plenty of workspace and media storage comes with this set up.
Complete the look with solid furniture that’s built to last and easy care. Allowing them freedom of choice will make the process easier and you might actually enjoy learning more about your child. After it’s all done, give the kid some space to relax in their new room. They’ve earned it.
