What Do You Eat Whilst On Holiday?

Parenting No Comments »

Now that Spring is within sight that means it must be time I looked at sorting out my Summer holiday.  We usually tend to alternate our holidays between Florida and Spain.

Last summer we all enjoyed the delights that Florida has on offer, so this year we are heading back to Spain.  They are 2 very different holidays.  Florida is action packed and very busy, whereas Spain is 2 weeks of lying by the pool and venturing out in the evening for a nice meal.

This year is going to be strange as it will be the first time my son hasn’t come on holiday with us.   He has decided to go back to Florida with his girlfriend!

We are all going to miss him, in particular my teenage daughter.   In previous holidays it wouldn’t be unusual for the pair of them to spend the entire day messing about in the swimming pool.   We always take with us the rubber rings, lilos and splat balls.   Last time I took some water bombs with us and I will admit that we had great fun using them.

This year I suppose it will be upto hubby and I to try and keep our daughter busy.    Mind you I can’t see it being a problem because my husband turns into a big kid on holiday anyway!!

Much as I enjoy messing about around the pool, the evenings are my favourite time.   It gives me a good old excuse to glam up and wear all the new summer clothes I have bought.

Usually because of the vast array of restaurants on offer, we have the normal arguments about who wants to eat what and end up wandering around all night trying to decide.

Personally speaking give me a Comida Mexicana restaurant (Mexican to you and I).  Hubby is into his steaks, so pretty much any restaurant is okay for him.   My daughter loves her pizza, but never tries anything other than Margarita!!

The last time we visited Spain we even took advantage of a food delivery service on offer at one of the local Spanish restaurants.   Food delivery in Spanish is known as Comida a domicilio, so watch out for that next time you are on holiday.

Discovering Great Vacation Destinations For Your Family

Parenting No Comments »

We have always lived here in the South where we get almost no snow, but I love winter time and I want a winter with snow. That’s why we choose to take a vacation to some place snowy. We really didn’t care where we went as long as there was snow and hot tubs. While doing some online research looking for vacation destinations I saw Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We packed up and headed to Tennessee and everyone loved it.

The quickest way to look for vacation destinations is on the internet. You may find yourself surprised when you see all the deals they have. You will run across several vacation package deals that come with accommodations, food, and even travel sometimes. Before you book the accommodations you might want to decide if you will want a hotel, chalet, condo, or cabin. It will depend on where you take your trip as to which types of accommodations they have.

When we went to Tennessee on vacation we stayed in a cabin and it was great. At night we all put our sleepwear on and sat around in front of the fireplace. We just sat there and talked for hours. This was definitely my favorite part of the vacation. If you decide to vacation somewhere a little warmer you wont need a fire place. Even though it does make for a warm family moment.

We our kids feel asleep by the fire we covered them over with blankets to keep them warm. Then me and my wife climbed on the sofa to snuggle together as we read our suspense books. I like reading suspense with a little action mixed in but my wife prefers to read a little suspense with a lot of romance mixed in. The point is the trip brought us back to each other, we became a family again even if it didn’t last.

Your teenagers or grown kids will start doing there own stuff and you will hardly ever see them. That is why taking a family vacation is so important it brings the family together. Any time spent with the family is great.

After choosing a destination and booking the accommodations there is still one more thing you will want to do. Take a little time to do research to find activities for the whole family. We all wanted to ski but we needed to learn first, so I found a website online and found a ski instructor that was willing to teach us all.

You don’t have to worry about not bringing any equipment you might need for certain things because there are shops every where that rent out gear. As a souvenir for the family to take home we let everyone pick out their own ski helmet for us to buy. Then we just rented the rest. Remember it really does not much matter what you are doing or where you are doing it as long as you and your family are happy and together.

Dancing Is Great Way of Keeping Fit

Parenting No Comments »

My youngest daughter has been a member of her cheerleading group now for a couple of years and she really enjoys it. She has entered many competitions with her group and to be fair they have done really well, although first place still unfortunately eludes them. They have come second and third a couple of times though, which is pretty good considering how new the group actually are.

She thinks that perhaps the reason for them not quite reaching first place is because a lot of the other teams who compete and score well also attend dancing groups, so their dancing skills are absolutely fantastic.

She is going with the train of thought that her group could benefit from some dance lessons and this will hopefully improve their dance skills, and that just might boost their chances at the competitions.

She is also already talking about the possibility of dancing holidays for the group, where they can go away for a weekend and literally learn to dance. She is very similar to me and when she gets an idea in her head, she doesn’t let it slip!!

Mind you, saying that I do think it sounds like a fantastic idea as although they are all brilliant at their cheerleading and gymnastics I feel their dancing lets them down.

At present the team consist of nearly 40 girls and 1 very brave boy and when they are at their competitions, some of them appear to be a little un-coordinated.

Later this year they already have entered some pretty large competitions, and already they are upping their practice sessions. I think it’s great to see kids actually wanting to do well at their chosen sport and putting so much time and effort in.

I must say that with all the competitions the team enter and the uniforms we have to buy, accommodation costs, travel costs, etc. cheerleading isn’t a cheap sport. However my daughter really enjoys taking part, so that is the most important factor.

The Welsh Actually Enjoy Taking Their Holidays in Wales

Parenting No Comments »

This term my daughter has been assigned a project at school and her topic is facts and trivia relating to Wales.

My first impression was how boring, she could have had somewhere more interesting than Wales. However, I will admit that she has told me a few interesting details about Wales already.

I have already discovered that the name of Wales actually comes from the Cymraeg word of Gwalia, which when translated means “Homeland”.

Wales is a relatively small country compared to some and apart from it’s border to England is completely surrounded by sea.  To the south is the Bristol Channel, with St. George’s Channel to the west and finally the Irish Sea to the north.

There have been many fine actors who have been born in Wales, including Sir Anthony Hopkins, the very fine Richard Burton and the beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones.

Of course Catherine has escaped Wales for the delights of the USA, but she often pops back and stays at Hotels in Wales.  She has also been known for her Self Catering Wales escapades when she visits her family.

Catherine however doesn’t just stay in Wales, she also enjoys her UK Family Holidays with her celebrity husband and her 2 children. It’s also been know for Catherine and her family to pop into a local pub for their lunch and have a chat with all the locals.

I have got a little sidetracked and have come off the subject. This must be something that runs in our family as it would seem that my daughter has problems with this as well.

She has a wonderful imagination, but unfortunately when she is writing any stories or essays, she really goes off the subject and loses the theme of her story.

It was only last week that her English teacher had a meeting with her about her work.  It’s funny in my day a vivid imagination was something to praise, not be quashed.

My next instalment on the joys of Wales will follow as soon as my daughter decides to get on with the work she should be doing. At the moment though she is happily working on a short story about slaying dragons, probably because she has just drawn a picture of the Welsh flag and she has gone off on one of her adventures!!

4 Great Electronic Gift Ideas For Christmas

Parenting No Comments »

The end of the first decade of the new millennium is fast approaching and while the world has not changed in many of the ways that people expected, there have also been advancements in technology have altered how we shop and even how we socialize. One example is the Christmas holiday. More and more electronics and electronic toys are increasing in demand. If you are shopping for a loved one or child you will need to keep in mind that they will likely want some of these items. If you don’t know where to start, here are some suggestions that you can use to help make the right picks.

Computers are fast becoming something that everyone uses and more importantly owns. It is not just for playing games or answering email. Kids use it to also do homework and even socialize with their friends via social platforms such as facebook and MySpace. Also computers are becoming cheaper making it easier for a household that plans properly to buy more than one for their home. Look for a computer that is going to last and has at least the minimum operating computer power. You also need to look for ways to make computing and surfing on the internet safe for your children by finding software that can screen out harmful websites and protects the computer from viruses.

Another new trend in gifts is cellphones. Phones are fast becoming more advanced. So much so that they are now becoming small computing devices capable of accessing the internet, playing games, and even tracking other phones. With the release of phones such as the iPhone and Droid we will see these top many wish lists. For your older children and loved ones wanting them make sure to check the carriers. For example the Droid can be purchased at a discount for customers who have an existing Verizon account. If you are shopping around for both a network and phone, try to look for one that best fits your needs.

Smart pets are another popular item this Christmas. The biggest news is that they have finally started to become cheaper. Items such as the Zhu Zhu pets and other similar toys are much more affordable and can even out perform their predecessors. The simple thing to do is to look in advertisements for discounts, deals, and rebates to help you save even more.

Game consoles have long established themselves on most families’ holiday shopping list. The good news is that the top 3 video game companies have cut prices on their signature systems making them more affordable. Also look for discounts on accessories and games. If you want to buy a system that your whole family can enjoy, the Nintendo Wii is a great choice.

You can make the holidays a lot more magical for your kids by having them get a call from Santa Claus. This is a great idea for the parent who has kids that are skeptical about the existence of the Jolly Old Elf and know that a costume won’t work. The best part is how simple it is to arrange. There are online vendors who offer the service. All you do is make the order and customize it so that the call is more real for your child. In the end they will really believe that they are talking to Santa.

Outdoor Christmas Lights – The Charm Of The Holiday

Home No Comments »

It’s time to be thinking of Christmas Decorating Ideas

It?s been a rough year on the economical front, but maybe with the Christmas season approaching you can begin planning for how you will decorate your front yard this year with lighting. It will put you in a holiday frame of mind to think about how the lights on front of your home will be sparkling when those riding by get a look at your efforts. What?s so bad about planning early anyway? With forward thinking you may be able to save money on the things you will need to make your display come alive. There are lots of new lighting ideas this year and many of them take energy conservation into consideration. One example is the LED lighting package.

First, decide what your theme will be this year

Sometimes, unless there is a preconceived idea, some people tend to just place lights here and there and finally it becomes a little messy. Others already know they want a display that is simple and quietly tasteful. All kids love the Santa figures with bright red and green lights, and some prefer Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. No matter what you decide though, there are plenty of ways to carry out your theme. If you really concentrate on your ideas, you could easily become the winner of the contest in your subdivision for the most cheerfully lit home.

Try not to go overboard and have too many lights

Unless you?ve decided to have your yard included in the ?tacky light tour? this year, maybe you won?t want to include too many lights or too many plastic lighted characters, or inflatable cartoon characters. Too many figures in your yard can be in poor ?taste? for such a lovely season of the year. If you have doubts about how much is ?too much?, talk your design plans over with a lighting specialist at your local lighting store. An electrical professional can also direct you in how to avoid wiring issues in your setup. And so, early planning is a good thing. With some creative thought, your outdoor Christmas lighting this year can be the most attractive, most energy efficient ever

Special Santa Gifts make Season Merrier

Parenting No Comments »

This is the time of year when people just seem happier than any other time of year. Anticipation of Christmas makes children’s eyes sparkle as they look forward to Santa’s annual visit. Preparing to celebrate Christmas puts most adults in a good humor. A couple of items that can make the season merrier, especially for the children, are special Santa gifts and Santa calls.

When we say Santa gifts, we usually picture a huge pile of wrapped presents underneath a Christmas tree. Santa gifts in the sense we mean now is gifts that pertain to Santa Claus given before Christmas Eve. Santa gifts come in many different forms. Some are craft kits that have a Santa Claus theme. Others are activity pads centered around Santa and his workshop. Special ornaments that include a Santa theme may also be Santa gifts.

The availability of Santa gifts is widespread. Most can be purchased locally in discount or department stores. Sometimes, it may make more sense to make purchases online. This can especially apply when these items are offered in conjunction with other offers only available online.

Santa calls will make any child happier. Parents can arrange to have Santa make a live call to speak to their child or they can arrange a prerecorded Santa call. Choosing which to order is mainly a matter of what the parents are willing to pay and the age of the child. A live Santa call is set up so that a real person calls the child at a prearranged time. Once the child is on the line, a conversation will be held concerning the child’s behavior and accomplishments during the previous year and a reassurance that Santa is bringing something nice this year. Several pieces of personal information will be needed by the person making the call so that the call is completely personalized.

For people with a tighter budget and younger children, a prerecorded Santa call may be the better choice. These calls are scheduled and dialed by computer. The child’s name and gender are edited into a cleverly written script that includes pauses to encourage interaction from the child. These calls only cost about half as much as live calls. They are very popular and should be booked well in advance, before the schedule is too full to allow a call at a time desired by the parents.

The Christmas season is a tremendously joyous and merry time of year. The Christmas spirit is infectious and people just seem happier this time of year. Several activities and a world of products contribute to making the mood merrier. Two classic examples of items that can make the season merrier are special Santa gifts and Santa calls. Both are designed to bring a great deal of joy to children. Seeing the children that happy can spread the feeling to parents and make the entire season merrier for everyone that is around them.

What Do People Around the World Do On Christmas Eve?

Family No Comments »

Children around the world wait all year for Christmas Eve. It’s a very magical and special time of year. Santa will soon be here, bringing gifts to all the good boys and girls…which is one tradition. But did you know that Christmas Eve traditions differ in various countries? In this article we will be exploring all the traditions of Christmas Eve. Welcome, we hope you enjoy it…

Santa and his elves have been working all year for this big night. Spanning the globe via sleigh and reindeer can have you working up quite an appetite. Children to the rescue. In both Canada and the United States, children leave some milk and cookies to feed Santa’s ferocious appetite. In Australia and Britain they prefer to leave mince pies and sherry. The children of Sweden want to satisfy Santa’s love of chocolate, so they leave brownies.

Santa’s reindeer are not to be forgotten on this big night. After all, they need to pull a sleigh filled with Christmas presents around the world. How tough is that? Once again, children to the rescue. Kids from the United States, Canada, Britain, and Australia leave a carrot to give those reindeer that “extra boost of energy” that they are going to need to make that final push. Children who follow the Dutch custom of sinterklass go a bit further in that they leave some hay with a carrot in a shoe. When they wake up the next morning the shoe will be replaced by a gift.

Reading books and watching television or videos have become a Christmas Eve tradition as well. One popular book is “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clark Moore. Popular videos are: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, or Frosty the Snowman. For those who like to sing Christmas Carols, popular titles are: Here Comes Santa Claus, Up on the Housetop, or Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

Just before going to bed, children around the world put their stockings on mantels in hope that “Santa will soon be here”, or so the song goes. They are full of anticipation that Santa will fill them with gifts, candy, and other goodies…ready for them when they wake up tomorrow morning. A quick look up the chimney to ensure that he has not arrived yet, a glance out the window to see if they can catch a glimpse of a passing sleigh, and perhaps unlocking the front door (in case Santa has problems navigating the chimney), then off to bed…

Parents have their part to play in Christmas Eve as well. There are a lot of gifts that need to be placed under the tree, and they will often be signed “From Santa” or “Love Santa”.

Did you enjoy this little tour of “The Night Before Christmas”? Christmas Eve is certainly a magical time of year…but we are not done yet. In future articles we will be exploring more aspects of Christmas, so stay tuned…

4 Fun and Interesting Christmas Stocking Stuffers

Parenting No Comments »

This Christmas you might be wracking your brain for something extra that you can give with your kid’s presents that will not cost a lot but will still be well received and maybe even cover for the fact that you had to give them only one big gift this year. A great ideas is to give them stocking stuffers. This is an old tradition that has been part of the Christmas holiday for a long time. If you have a fire place and can make some stockings you are in business. The tradition is that children hang their stockings in front of the fireplace to dry and when Santa comes he not only places presents under the tree, he also puts small toys and other goodies in the stockings. You can do the same and give your kids some great small presents for pennies on the dollar here are some fun suggestions to get you started.

Fruit is a great first choice to put in stockings. Many parents are becoming more concerned about their children eating healthy. You can put apples, oranges, and other solid fruit in the stockings along with the other items. It fits in with the tradition as it is honored around the world and also gives your kids a healthy snack to eat. You are able to give an affordable gift that is actually great for the health of your kids. This is sure to be a positive tradition that will promote good eating choices

Another great stocking stuffer are small toys. This will depend on the boy or girl but there are plenty of small affordable toys that you can purchase this Christmas. For boys you can put small cars, plains, or booster card packs for their card games. For girls you can put in small dolls such as Polly Pocket or mini Barbies or Bratz dolls. You can also go with generic versions of these toys. Another great toy will be Tomagatchies small electronic pet games that both boys and girls can enjoy.

You can also put in items that will exercise your children’s minds. Try purchasing word puzzles, word games, trivia games, and other small mind games that will entertain and train your kids’s brains. You can also find cheap sliding puzzles or purchase rubiks cubes. These are great because they will be small enough to fit most stockings and will give your kids hours of amusement on Christmas day as they try to solve the different puzzles and games. If your child has a gameboy or PSP you can also include new games as stocking stuffers.

Finally leave a special present from Santa. A good options is a letter in response to your own child’s letter. You can order one online that will list your child’s accomplishments, what they wanted that year and include a hand written signature from Santa. If you order it on time you can even get a special postmark. You can further personalize the letters by getting different letter that fit each child’s situation. There are letters for kids who have learned to write, kids who are going through a hard time, and even kids who have parents that are in the military and have been deployed. Your children will feel that Santa really ready their letters and their faith in the jolly old Elf will remain.
