I bet there won’t be any one who has not heard about Sherlock Homes. He is one of the oldest detective who is around who was born in the year 1897. He is the work of a Scottish author Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle.

Holmes is not only the best detective of his time but at times is also considered to be the best ever. What make him distinct are his intellectual prowess and his enormous scope of observation. Apart from this his forensic skills and astute deductive reasoning is what sets him apart from his contemporaries and the new breed of detectives.

From decades this character has been transformed to silver screen many times. Though it has been tried many times the best work came out when the character was recreated by Guy Ritchie, the acclaimed director of movies like Snatch and RocknRolla. Robert John Downey Jr. played the main protagonist with actors like Jude Law and Rachel McAdams reprising the other characters.

Throughout the making of the movie Downey Jr. was very happy to portray a weirdo, quirky and nut case. Though not the obvious choice for the role as Ritchie wanted to have a young Holmes, but soon he realized that he had hit a jackpot to have someone like Downey around.

Both of them are martial arts fanatic and hence added the well choreographed fight sequences in the movie. Downey had to work a lot for the role. He lost quite a bit of weight as Holmes was a skinny detective. Apart from him the other main character is of his friend and ally Dr. John Watson played by Jude Law. A surgeon and war veteran, Dr. Watson has been an able stalwart to Holmes. In the movie he has been portrayed as a strong ally to Holmes rather than a frivolous partner as portrayed in some of the older movies.

Though Law wasn’t the original choice for the role but still he was deemed as a better choice than others.

The movie in total was nominated for two Oscars in all the categories, one for the original score in a motion picture while the other was for achievement in art direction. Though didn’t win any award here it was widely appreciated. At the same time it did win several awards in other places. Hans Zimmer who has also composed the music for The Dark Night was asked to score music for this too.

Though it was expected of him to reprise the magic, but Ritchie asked him to get him something totally different. Instruments like Banjo and Cimbalom were used to create the memorable music for the movie.
