There are countless challenges when it comes to parenting, and countless parents face a similar challenge and goal of helping their child stop bedwetting. There are as many theories as to why this is a problem for some children, as there are parents trying to deal with it. So, take heart because you’re not alone. Not only do parents want their child to stop bedwetting, children also want to stop bedwetting. It’s not a problem that lends itself to sleeping over friend’s houses or other overnight events, since if it happened when the child wasn’t at home, the embarrassment and more could be devastating.
It is wise to immediately consult your child’s pediatrician to discuss why your child is, and how to, stop bedwetting. Medical causes should be ruled out first and, should there be a medical reason preventing your child from being able to stop bedwetting, then you can immediately treat it and move forward. Parents know that begging, pleading or punishing are not effective tools to stop bedwetting. Usually, although not the answer most parents want to hear, children grow out of it and one day stop bedwetting. That’s it – it’s over.
If there is no medical reason for bedwetting, there are still things parents can try to stop bedwetting. Limiting how late in evening your child drinks, making sure they use the bathroom right before bed, removing caffeine and other bladder stimulants from the diet and increasing abdominal and pelvic muscles (by exercising) are all easy steps to take. They probably will not stop bedwetting, but they can point you in the right direction and, hey, you never know.
So when you feel overwhelmed and at a loss, remind yourself you’re not alone and there are literally thousands of parents also trying to help their child stop bedwetting; take a deep breath and know it will work out and your child will soon stop bedwetting.
