Music have the undeniable power to make children smarter, verbally proficient, more socially matured, and self confident. Just how does music do all these things.
Everyone who writes about the benefits of singapore children music classes state that this type of activity develops other skills in children, but just how do they know this and where are their statistics. The fact is, there are numerous evidence to back up the the assertion that music helps children develop other skills.
Recently a study conducted by the University of Toronto showed that children music lessons or even voice lessons had a positive effect on children’s IQ. Four sets of 6 year olds were requested to participate in this study. The first group were tasked to take up piano lessons, the second group had vocal lessons, the third took theatre arts, and the fourth group did not take any after school activities.
When the study first began, the children were tested and their IQ score was noted. The kids were sent on to their first grade class, then to their respective activities. Right after school year ended, their IQ’s were again tested and the results came out varied.
All of the children increased by about 4 points each, and this was attributed to their regular classes. The kids who took music lessons, however, had additional increase in their IQ’s of almost 3 points, while the child who took theatre classes posted no additional increase.
Scientists conclude that this increase is mainly due to the many facets of music, that when thoroughly explored, activate more dynamic activity in the brain. Learning various things about music like music intervals, chords, music symbols and giving expression and interpretation to music pieces give the child’s brain major exercise. If your child starts early with music lessons, you will see signifcant growth in his reasoning abilities.
Curiously, the same study was tried on adults, and their IQ’s didn’t show any marked increase.
It is now up to you whether you will heed the results of this study. But if your child is showing interest and inclination to learn a musical instrument, then you should seriously consider an after school activity that involves music and not pass up the opportunity of helping your child develop his skills and talents.
