It’s All About Canister Vacuums

Up until the 1890s the only way to clean a rug was to sweep it, or in good weather, carry it outside to hang over a rope - and beat it. This was so ineffective women finally complained loudly, and the first vacuum cleaner was born. Even after all these years the vacuum principle is the same. With a handle, a motor that sucks, and a few wheels, all vacuums were pretty much the same. Until the canister. So, let’s learn about canister vacuums.

Canisters became popular in the 1950s. Housewives loved the agility and lighter weights. These new models were much easier to carry up and down stairs, and they were the favored choice for anyone who needed to vacuum carpeting on stairs themselves.

Suddenly many things in the house could be vacuumed and dusted just by using the attachments that came with the vacuum, and taking advantage of the long cords and hoses. Curtains, ceilings and even the tops of paintings could be cleaned simply, with no damage.

Canisters could go anywhere. Even floors under heavy furniture could be reached. Corners that had been previously tough to reach and needed special attention could now be cleaned in seconds. All surfaces could be cleaned without fear of leaving scratches behind.

An entire industry popped up for the sole purpose of designing and supplying an attachment for every possible reason. Attachments were made for cleaning the inside of the family car, vacuuming crumbs from inside the refrigerator, and everything in between.

It was even easy to replace the bag inside. Pop up the top, take out the bag, and pop in another one in less than a minute. Some vacuums had lights that lit up when the bag was full.

With all these benefits, canister vacuums will be around for another long while.
