As one would assume by the name a coffee table is a small, low to the ground table meant to be a place to put one’s drinks while sitting on furniture the table is near. As they have become more common in the home, the purposes coffee tables serve, and concordantly their styles, have changed dramatically resulting in a whole slew of styles and shapes becoming available. They can be central to your daily activities or be placed in your home just for show.
A wooden table might find its best home in a more traditional, simple, or rustic home. Of all the forms of living room furniture, these are far and away the most popular. The present arrangement of the room and the furniture in it play a large part in what style of coffee table you should get. Balance is key when creating a look, for example a room with many wooden pieces of furniture, could a matching wood coffee table.
Glass coffee tables are probably the second most common style of coffee table in the home today. They feel a little classier with a more modern look. Perfect for small rooms, a glass topped table will make your feel room larger than it is by allowing light to pass through it and “opening” the space up. It is also a good way to show off your nice flooring.
The only limits today on what materials, styles, and design your coffee table can take the form of are your imagination and price. A relatively recent substitute for the traditional coffee table is the upholstered pieces like ottomans with serving trays placed atop them. Featuring straight edges and sharp lines, cube-like tables are becoming vogue as a more modern replacement for the traditional coffee table.
One special concern is for homes that have children living in them. Many coffee tables are made of hard materials with sharp edges and corners. While not inherently dangerous, children who have not totally mastered walking or who are running through the house could possibly hurt themselves. A coffee table with round edges or made of soft materials might be better to avoid such accidents.
One other thing with respect to appearance that you should be aware of is that coffee tables have the ability to become your home’s clutter catching. While this is convenient, it certainly not preferred as it makes a room look messy and unorganized. Having a receptacle for all the clutter on your coffee table will help you clean the table quickly and put all of the clutter in one space so that you can go through it later.
